Documentary
that stays.
Documentary photography is one of the most powerful tools we have for understanding how other people live — and for holding power to account. Calgary doesn't yet have a permanent institutional home for that work. We are building one: a physical space in Calgary, a public archive platform, and a publication — theartefakt.org — that draws from both. Four pillars. One archive. Two cities.

The Foundation funds and stewards the work. The Publication reads it. The Archive holds it. Different surfaces of the same project — one collection of photographs, three doors in.
The Artefakt
Long-form documentary publishing. Essays, films, dialogue, archive selections. Where the work goes public.
Artefakt Preserve
Working archive — captioned, keyworded, geolocated. Browse, search, and license. Where every photograph lives and where editors find what they need.
Artefakt Foundation
The non-profit. Witness, Learn, Preserve, Sustain. The institution that funds and stewards the practice.
Founded 2026
Founded by Jon Lowenstein — Guggenheim Fellow, National Geographic Explorer, TED Senior Fellow, founding member of NOOR Images. Based in Calgary (Treaty 7 Territory) and Chicago.
Artefakt is an Alberta Society based in Calgary, with ongoing programming in Calgary and Chicago. A separate U.S. nonprofit entity may be established as the organization grows.
